Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs scored four unanswered runs but fell short in a 5-4 loss to South Bend in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. The Chiefs drop to 13-14 on the season and travel to Bowling Green for a three-game series starting on Monday.

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs scored four unanswered runs but fell short in a 5-4 loss to South Bend in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. The Chiefs drop to 13-14 on the season and travel to Bowling Green for a three-game series starting on Monday.

    South Bend took the lead on Chiefs starter Jake Walsh in the top of the third. Jhonny Bethencourt reached on an infield single with one out and Jared Young brought him in with a triple to give South Bend a 1-0 lead. Austin Filiere scored Young on a single to left and the visitors stayed hot as Miguel Amaya singled to left to put two runners on. Up 2-0, Michael Cruz cleared the bases with a three-run homer over the right field wall as South Bend took control for a 5-0 advantage.
    The Chiefs answered in the bottom of the third against South Bend starter Rollie Lacy. Bryce Denton was hit by a pitch and Taylor Bryant singled to left field. Scott Hurst bounced into a double play that moved Denton to third and he scored on a single by Irving Lopez to get Peoria on the board trailing 5-1.
    Peoria cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fourth as Juan Yepez looped a one out single to center and moved to second on an infield single by Ortega. Yepez stole third when Ortega broke for second on the next pitch, Yepez stole home to trim the visitors' lead to 5-2.
    The longball was used to cut the South Bend advantage further in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Jesus Camargo. Bryant drew a leadoff walk and Lopez drilled a two-run homer with one out to draw the Chiefs within a run, 5-4. The home run was Lopez's third of the season and second of the homestand
    Walsh (1-1) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits through seven innings with two walks and five strikeouts. C.J. Saylor threw 1/3 of an inning and didn't allow a run or hit with two walks and one strikeouts. Kodi Whitley pitched 1 2/3 shutout innings without surrendering a hit with one walk and two strikeouts.
