Chiefs Shutout TinCaps Saturday

Oviedo tosses gem, Gonzalez goes deep

Peoria, IL The Peoria Chiefs shut out the Fort Wayne TinCaps 4-0 in the series opener on Saturday night. The Chiefs improved to 12-9 in the second half and 51-40 overall with game two of the series set for 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.

    Peoria starter Johan Oviedo danced out of danger in the top of the third inning. Jack Suwinski lined a one-out single and stole second. Kelvin Melean and Jeisson Rosario both drew two-out walks to load the bases. Oviedo escaped the jam on a Tirso Ornelas fly out to right.
    The Chiefs loaded the bases and took the lead in the bottom of the third on TinCaps starter Aaron Leasher. Jose Martinez drew a leadoff walk and Irving Lopez was hit by a pitch with one out. Rayder Ascanio singled to load the bases and Elehuris Montero drove in Martinez on a sacrifice fly to center to get on the board 1-0. Yariel Gonzalez rocketed a three-run homer for his fifth long ball of the season and a 4-0 lead.
    Oviedo (5-7) earned the win throwing six scoreless innings on two hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. Robbie Gordon threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings allowing two hits with one walk and one strikeout. Bryan Dobzanski earned the save throwing 1 1/3 innings allowing one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.
