Chiefs Swept on Intentional Walk Wild Pitch
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA- The Peoria Chiefs lost in the last at-bat for the second game in a row as a wild pitch on an intentional walk scored the winning run for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in a 5-4 Sunday afternoon game. The loss drops the Chiefs to 27-28 in the second half and 64-60 overall with 15 games remaining.
The Chiefs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second against Ryan Eades. Steve Bean led off with a walk and Cesar Valera was hit by a pitch. After a double play moved Bean to third, the Chiefs took a 1-0 lead as Michael Schulze doubled to left. Vaughn Bryan singled to center for a 2-0 lead and he moved to second on the throw home. Juan Herrera's double to left scored Bryan for a 3-0 Chiefs lead.
Cedar Rapids got on the board in the fourth inning on a walk, single and RBI groundout against Kyle Helisek. Michael Quesada led off the fifth with a single, move to second on a sac bunt and advanced to third on a single by Jonatan Hinojosa. Logan Wade launched a full-count three-run homer over the high left-field fence for a 4-3 Cedar Rapids lead.
The Chiefs tied the game against Eades in the sixth as Bean walked and scored on a triple by Richy Pedroza. The Chiefs couldn't grab the lead though as Pedroza was thrown out at the plate on a fielders choice to first base.
The game stayed tied into the ninth with former Bradley University pitcher Jacob Booden on the mound in his Chiefs debut. With two outs, Wade doubled to right field and moved to third on a wild pitch before Chad Christensen walked. The Chiefs opted to intentionally walk Mitch Garver to load the bases but the first pitch bounced past Bean to the backstop as Wade scored for a 5-4 Kernels win.
Helisek allowed four runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings while walking two and striking out two. Jhonny Polanco allowed two hits over 1 2/3 shutout innings with a strikeout. Booden (0-1) took the loss allowing one run on one hit, two walks, two wild pitches and a strikeout.
