Midland, MI - Sunday’s starter Inohan Paniagua took a no-hitter into the seventh inning but the Chiefs could not get the bats going in a 1-0 loss to the Great Lakes Loons in the series finale. The Chiefs and Loons split their 12-game season series in 2022, with the home team winning 10 of the 12 contests.
Paniagua and Great Lakes starter Emmet Sheehan each retired the first six batters they faced through two innings. The Chiefs picked up the game’s first baserunner in the third on an infield hit from Noah Mendlinger. The next batter, Todd Lott, reached on a check swing single to place runners at first and second for Jacob Buchberger. The third baseman lined a soft single into right field for the third consecutive hit of the inning. With a pair of outs in the frame, Mendlinger was given the green light to try and score but a good throw from Damon Keith cut down Mendlinger at the plate.
From there, scoring chances were few and far between. Through six, the Loons lone reach came on a walk drawn by Imanol Vargas.
In the seventh, the Loons recorded their first hit on a solid single from the aforementioned Vargas, who was much of the Great Lakes offense on Sunday. Following the knock, Paniagua was lifted in favor of Nick Trogrlic-Iverson. Paniagua allowed just one hit over 6.1 innings and whiffed seven batters, his second quality start in four outings in a Chiefs uniform. Trogrlic-Iverson went on to get the last two outs of the seventh to keep the game scoreless.

Both teams went down in order in the eighth before a lead-off single from Harold Restituyo got the Loons started in the ninth. However, he was quickly erased as Jorbit Vivas lined into a double play that wiped out a Great Lakes rally.
In extra innings, Peoria placed runners at second and third with one out in the 10th. After Mack Chambers was retired via a strikeout, pinch-hitter Aaron McKeithan went down looking to keep the Chiefs off the board.
