Schmid Leads Chiefs to Shutout Win

Beloit, WI - The Peoria Chiefs recorded their 12th shutout of the season, second most in the Midwest League, with a 2-0 road win over the Beloit Snappers Friday night. With seven shutout innings in which he struck out three and allowed just two hits, lefty Colin Schmid was the Pekin Insurance Beyond the Expected Player of the Game.

  The Chiefs turned a double play to get out of the second inning after consecutive Snappers one-out singles. Schmid didn't allow another hit the rest of the way as he retired 15 in a row before issuing a walk.
      Peoria took the lead in the fourth against Beloit starter Angello Infante. Delvin Perez doubled to left with one out and he easily scored on a single to left by Leandro Cedeno as the Chiefs went on top 1-0.
      After Schmid left the game, Leonardo Taveras performed a high-wire act in the eighth. He struck out the first two Snappers before allowing consecutive hits to put runners on the corners. A wild pitch put two in scoring position by Taveras struck out Max Schuemann looking on a full-count pitch to preserve the lead.
       The Chiefs doubled their lead in the top of the ninth. Jonatan Machado's second hit of the game came with one out in the frame and he moved to second on a groundout. Brendan Donovan singled to center off Chase Cohen to score Machado for a 2-0 Chiefs lead. Taveras slammed the door with two more strikeouts in the ninth for the save.
      Schmid (6-5) won his second start on the road trip as he gave up just two singles and walked one over seven shutout innings. The lefty struck out three and did not allow a runner past second base. Taveras earned his third save with five strikeouts over two shutout innings.
      The Chiefs return home Saturday, August 10 for a three-game series against the Clinton LumberKings and the opener begins at 6:35 p.m..       Saturday is Hero Night with Marvel's Spiderman and Black Panther on hand. The Chiefs will wear special Organ Donor jerseys to raise money for Gift of Hope and there will be a post-game fireworks show presented by Pekin Insurance. There will also be a Pitch In For Charity Tennis Ball Toss to raise money for the Central Illinois Ronald McDonald House.
