Alfonso Lopez, Member of Bowie High School’s 1949 State Champion Baseball Team, to Throw Out Chihuahuas Opening Day Ceremonial First Pitch

EL PASO – April 1, 2024 – Alfonso Lopez, the last living member of the member of the 1949 Bowie High School Texas State Championship baseball team, will throw out the Chihuahuas Opening Day ceremonial first pitch tomorrow, Tuesday, April 2. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with first pitch slated for 6:35 p.m.
This marks the first time the 93-year-old Lopez will throw out a first pitch and the third time a member of the Bowie State Championships team has had the honor. Furthermore, the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the 1949 team's championship win adds another layer of significance to the occasion.
The Bowie Bears defeated the Austin's Stephen F. Austin High School (Austin, Texas) 3-2 in the title game to win the championship. A mural by Gaspar Enriquez, located on the concourse of Southwest University Park, highlights the lasting impact of their achievement.
Along with the ceremonial first pitch, the first 3,000 guests through the gates with paid admission will receive an Opening Day commemorative Rally Towel presented by Mattress Firm. The six-game series concludes in a Sunday day game with a 12:05 p.m. first pitch.
The Chihuahuas, who started the 2024 campaign Friday, March 29, are off to a 2-1 start after the series win at Albuquerque (Colorado Rockies affiliate). The Chihuahuas put on an offensive display scoring 27 runs in three games led by Bret Sullivan's Pacific Coast leading eight hits.
