MOBILE, Ala. (May 23, 2018) - In addition to promoting Matt Thaiss and Jeremy Rhoades , the Los Angeles Angels also announced Tuesday that infielder Luis Rengifo will be one of four new players joining the Double-A Mobile BayBears from Class A Advanced Inland Empire.
Rengifo, 21, was acquired by the Angels on March 20, 2018 as the player to be named later in a trade that sent first baseman C.J. Cron to the Tampa Bay Rays. In 41 games with Inland Empire, Rengifo slashed .323/.426/.466 with 16 RBIs, 16 extra-base hits, 36 runs scored, and a league-high 22 stolen bases. His 22 steals rank second in all of Minor League Baseball.
The Naguanagua, Venezuela native was originally signed by the Mariners as an international free agent in 2014. Rengifo was traded to Tampa Bay on August 6, 2017 and split time between Clinton and Bowling Green in the Class A Midwest League last year. The switch-hitter had a .250 average with 12 home runs, 52 RBIs, 27 doubles, five triples, and 34 stolen bases combined between the two teams.
Rengifo is currently the No. 28 prospect in the Angels organization, according to MLB Pipeline.
The BayBears also received first baseman Jared Walsh , outfielder Brandon Sandoval , and right-handed pitcher Tyler Stevens from Inland Empire. Walsh, who played in 20 games with Mobile last year, led the California League with 13 home runs and 36 RBIs to start the 2018 season. Sandoval was second in the circuit with a .352 batting average.
In corresponding moves, third baseman Taylor Ward and outfielder Bo Way were placed on the 7-day disabled list Tuesday.
The BayBears begin a five-game home series against the Biloxi Shuckers Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. CDT. Angels No. 23 prospect Luis Pena (1-4, 6.38 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Cody Ponce (1-2, 5.28 ERA) for the Shuckers. Live coverage can be seen on MiLB.tv (subscription required, promo code: BAYBEARS) and heard on the BayBears Broadcast Network, the TuneIn Radio App, and the MiLB First Pitch App, with the Countdown to First Pitch starting at 6:15 p.m.
