PENSACOLA, Fla. (June 13, 2018) - The Los Angeles Angels announced that right-handed pitcher Griffin Canning and infielder Luis Rengifo from the Mobile BayBears have been named the organization's Minor League Pitcher and Player of the Month for May.
Canning, 22, was the starting pitcher in a combined no-hitter on May 14 against Birmingham, the second one he was involved in this season. He closed out the month with nine consecutive hitless innings and eight straight scoreless frames. Canning allowed just two runs, one earned, on six hits over 18 1/3 innings in four May starts with Mobile.
The UCLA product is currently the Angels No. 3 pitching prospect, and he is ranked No. 7 overall in the organization, according to MLB Pipeline. Canning is in his first professional season, after being selected in the second round (No. 47 overall) of the 2017 MLB Draft. He was named a Southern League Mid-Season All-Star but will not be available to pitch in the game.
Rengifo, 21, joined the BayBears on May 22 from Class A Advanced Inland Empire. During the month, he combined for a .354 average (34-for-96) with 12 extra-base hits, 22 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases between the two levels. Rengifo had multiple hits in 11 of his 24 games played.
The Venezuela native was acquired by the Angels on March 20, 2018 as the player to be named later in a trade that sent first baseman C.J. Cron to the Tampa Bay Rays. Rengifo is currently the No. 28 prospect in the Angels organization, according to MLB Pipeline.
In addition to Canning and Rengifo, former BayBears infielder David Fletcher (Angels No. 21 prospect) was recognized by the Angels as Defender of the Month. Fletcher received the award last May while playing with Mobile and again this April with Salt Lake. The Angels selected his contract Tuesday, and he is in the starting lineup for Wednesday's road game against the Seattle Mariners.
The BayBears begin a five-game road series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. CDT.
