Beloit, WI (June 16, 2018) -Ryan Costello homered twice and drove in six as the Clinton LumberKings came from behind to drop the Beloit Snappers 8-5 on Sunday afternoon at Harry Pohlman Field. Costello ends the first half leading the LumberKings (39-31) in home runs with 12 after his second multi-homer game of the season.
Ariel Sandoval started the scoring for Clinton with a solo home run in the first inning off Snappers (32-36) starter Jordan Mitchell. The home run was Sandoval's ninth of the season and part of a 3-for-5 afternoon at the plate.
Mitchell allowed no more runs following the Sandoval home run in the first. He worked 6.2 innings and struck out 10 while holding the LumberKings to four his and not issuing a walk.
The Snappers answered right back in the bottom of the first inning. Hunter Hargrove, who drove in three runs in the game, started the scoring for Beloit with a two-run home to left, his fourth big fly of the year.
The Snappers added to their lead against LumberKings starter Nick Wells. Jesus Lopez notched his eighth home run of the season with a solo shot to left and Beloit added another run in the bottom of the third to go up 4-1.
The LumberKings began their comeback in the top of the seventh inning against Snappers reliever Seth Martinez. Nick Thurman sliced a double down the line in left to force home a run but the LumberKings stranded the bases loaded.
In the top of the eighth, Costello tied the game with a dramatic two-run home run to right that made it 4-4.
Beloit was quick to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the eighth. LumberKings reliever Scott Boches allowed an infield RBI single to Lopez that put the Snappers on top 5-4.
The LumberKings then loaded the bases with two out in the top of the ninth. Snappers Manager Webster Garrison visited the mound and decided to stay with Martinez (1-1) to face Costello. On a 1-1 pitch, Costello slugged his second home run of the game and his first grand slam of the season over the wall in center to put Clinton on top for good.
Boches (2-1) picked up his second win of the season for his two innings of relief. Collin Kober worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his third save of the season.
The LumberKings will now take the next three days off for the All-Star Break before opening the second half with a seven-game home stand at Ashford University Field. Clinton will send four representatives to the All-Star game in Lansing. outfielder Jack Larsen, infielder Ryan Costello, and pitchers Ryne Inman and Collin Kober.
