JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (June 1, 2019) - The Los Angeles Angels announced Saturday that they plan to recall former Mobile BayBears left-handed pitcher Jose Suarez from Triple-A Salt Lake. Suarez is expected to pitch in Sunday's road game against the Seattle Mariners.
Suarez, 21, made seven starts with the BayBears last season after opening the year with Class A Advanced Inland Empire. He went 2-1 with a 3.03 ERA and 51 strikeouts over 29 2/3 innings pitched in the Southern League. Suarez fanned a career-high 11 batters in each of his last two starts with Mobile.
The Venezuelan southpaw is in his fifth professional season after signing with the Angels as an international free agent on July 3, 2014. In 22 games, 21 starts, with Salt Lake over the past two seasons, Suarez posted a 3-4 record with a 4.35 ERA and struck out 93 batters in 101 1/3 innings.
Suarez was named an MiLB.com Angels Organization All-Star in 2017 and 2018. He is currently the Angels No. 2 pitching prospect, and he is ranked No. 5 overall in the organization, according to MLB Pipeline.
Suarez is set to become the 16th player to make his Major League debut for the Angels after spending time with the BayBears. He will be the 12th player from the 2018 BayBears team to appear in a Major League game. Former BayBears infielder Luis Rengifo , right-handed pitcher Griffin Canning , and two-way player Jared Walsh have all made their Major League debuts for the Angels this year.

The BayBears return home next Friday and host a total of 70 home dates through Labor Day, September 2.
