Former BayBears pitcher Osmer Morales called up by Angels

MOBILE, Ala. (August 13, 2018) - The Los Angeles Angels announced Monday that they have selected the contract of former Mobile BayBears right-handed pitcher Osmer Morales from Triple-A Salt Lake. Morales has a chance to make his Major League debut Monday night, as the Angels begin a nine-game road trip at Petco Park in San Diego.
Morales, 25, made 16 starts with the BayBears last year, his only season at the Double-A level. He posted a 4-4 record and a 4.83 ERA. He walked just 29 batters in 76 1/3 innings pitched, and he finished second on the team with 81 strikeouts. Morales pitched in six games with the Angels as a non-roster invitee at Major League Spring Training this year.
In 21 games, 19 starts, with Salt Lake this season, Morales went 4-3 with a 6.22 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 92 2/3 innings pitched. He also made nine starts with the Bees to finish last season, after receiving a promotion to Triple-A on July 16. Morales posted a 2-1 record with a 3.22 ERA in 50 1/3 innings.
The Villa de Cura, Venezuela native signed with the Angels as a Minor League free agent on November 14, 2016. Morales was previously a member of the Seattle Mariners organization, spending parts of seven seasons in Seattle's farm system after signing his first professional contract on May 1, 2010.
Morales has a chance to become the 10th member of the 2017 BayBears squad to appear with the Angels this season. Infielder David Fletcher , outfielder Michael Hermosillo , catchers Francisco Arcia and Josè Briceño , and right-handed pitchers Justin Anderson , Jaime Barria , Parker Bridwell , Eduardo Paredes , and Jake Jewell have all spent time with the Angels in 2018.
The BayBears begin a six-game road series against the Biloxi Shuckers with a doubleheader Tuesday beginning at 5:35 p.m. CDT.
