CLINTON, IA (August 30, 2017) - Rayder Ascanio, a Clinton LumberKing in 2015, 2016, and 2017, has been involved as the key piece of a trade between the Seattle Mariners and St. Louis Cardinals. The Mariners will receive right-handed pitcher Mike Leake, cash considerations, and $750,000 in international cap space in exchange for infielder Ascanio.
Ascanio, 21, began the 2017 season with the LumberKings before earning a promotion to the Class High-A Modesto Nuts on June 3rd. The Venezuelan native spent parts of three seasons in Clinton but will best be remembered by fans for his celebration following the LumberKings Western Division Championship Series walk-off win against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Ascanio celebrated the win by taking Louie the LumberKings flag and running around the field in celebration. In 173 games in Clinton he batted .249 with seven home runs and 71 RBI. Ascanio at one point during the 2017 season was listed among the top 30 prospects in the Mariners organization but had fallen out of the top 30 at the time of the trade.
Ascanio is the third LumberKing from the 2017 season to be involved in a trade. He joins right-handed pitcher Brandon Miller, traded to the Miami Marlins, and infielder Luis Rengifo, traded to the Tampa Bay Rays, as LumberKings from this season to be traded.
The LumberKings will now open their final home series of the season with the first of three games against the Kane County Cougars on Wednesday night. Clinton left-hander Nick Wells (5-9, 6.41) will take the ball for the LumberKings and face Kane County's left-handed pitcher Mack Lemieux (7-5, 4.70). Game time is slated for 6:30 PM with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI beginning at 6:15 PM, Erik Oas will be on the call.
