KODAK, Tenn. (July 17, 2017) - Right-handed pitcher Grayson Long of the Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, has been named Southern League Pitcher of the Week for July 10 through 16. The 23-year-old made two six-inning starts and did not allow a run.
Long led the Mobile pitching staff with a total of 12 scoreless innings and only gave up seven hits in two quality starts. He struck out eight batters, matching his season-high, while issuing just one walk in a win July 11 at Birmingham. In Sunday's road start against Tennessee, Long fanned seven batters over six frames to earn his fifth win of the season.
The Mont Belvieu, Texas native was selected by the Angels in the third round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of Texas A&M University. After making three starts with Class A Advanced Inland Empire, he was promoted to Mobile on April 20. Long is sixth in the circuit with a 2.76 ERA through 84 2/3 innings, is tied for the team-lead with 79 strikeouts, and was named a Southern League Mid-Season All-Star. He is currently the No. 5 prospect and the No. 2 pitching prospect in the Angels organization, according to MLB Pipeline.
Long is the third BayBears player to earn a Southern League weekly award this season. Luis Diaz , who is currently with Triple-A Salt Lake, was named Pitcher of the Week on April 17, and Zach Houchins earned Player of the Week honors on June 12.
