BILOXI, Miss. (June 1, 2017) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced Thursday that right-handed pitcher Jaime Barria will join the Mobile BayBears from Class A-Advanced Inland Empire. He is scheduled to make his first Double-A start Sunday at Hank Aaron Stadium against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.
Barria, 20, was signed by the Angels as an international free agent on April 11, 2013. He made 11 starts with Inland Empire and went 4-3 with a 2.48 ERA (18 earned runs in 65.1 innings pitched). Barria struck out 57 batters and only issued 13 walks. He was recently named Pitcher of the Week in the California League following his start on May 19 against Lancaster. Barria tossed seven scoreless innings and only allowed two hits.
In his Minor League career, spanning parts of five seasons, Barria has a 21-18 record with a 3.56 ERA in 71 games, 58 starts. He spent the entire 2016 campaign in the starting rotation for Class A Burlington, leading the team with eight wins in a career-high 25 games. Barria recorded a 3.85 ERA, set career highs in innings pitched (117.0) and strikeouts (78), and was a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star.
The Panama City, Panama native is currently the Angels No. 5 pitching prospect, and he is ranked No. 9 overall in the organization, according to MLB Pipeline. Barria is one of three Top 10 Angels prospects on the BayBears active roster, joining right-handed pitcher Grayson Long (No. 6) and infielder David Fletcher (No. 10).
In a corresponding move, outfielder Forrestt Allday has been promoted to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Allday, 26, played 45 games with the BayBears and ranked second among qualifiers in the Southern League with a .318 batting average. He also drove in 19 runs, stole five bases, and drew a team-high 30 walks. Allday reached base in 32 consecutive games, dating back to April 24, the second-longest on-base streak in the circuit this season. Additionally, he had a 10-game hitting streak between April 25 and May 5.
The Galveston, Texas native was signed by the Angels as a Minor League free agent on April 8, 2016. Allday was originally selected by the Boston Red Sox in the eighth round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Central Arkansas.
This is the second time Allday has been promoted to Triple-A in his career. In 14 games with Salt Lake to finish last year, he hit .227 (10-for-44) with one RBI and three runs scored.
