ASHEVILLE, NC – The Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina (IIANC) are working to make the state’s roads and highway safer by bringing attention to the peril of distracted driving.

In a collaborative effort with four North Carolina minor league baseball teams, including the Asheville Tourists, IIANC is sponsoring a Distracted Driving Awareness game and renting billboards in the Asheville community featuring Mr. Moon with the message, ‘Play it Safe, Avoid Distractions While Driving.’

The Distracted Driving Awareness game will be on Friday, April 29. State Senator Kevin Corbin will throw out the first pitch at the Asheville game. The IIANC will serve as the presenting sponsor of the Post-Game Fireworks show.

Senator Corbin (R-Macon) is a sponsor of Senate Bill 20 Hands Free NC, along with Jim Burgin (R-Harnett), Mike Woodard (D-Durham), Vickie Sawyer (R-Iredell) and Todd Johnson (R-Union). Corbin, Burgin, Sawyer and Johnson are all independent insurance agents and members of IIANC. The legislation would make it illegal to hold a phone in your hand while driving a vehicle, as well as prohibit watching videos, playing games or checking social media while behind the wheel.

“No one disagrees that distracted driving is a serious problem on North Carolina roads, given it’s now the cause of 1-in-5 of all vehicle crashes in our state.” said Aubie KNIGHT, CEO of IIANC. “North Carolina needs a handsfree driving, to join the 36 states and territories that already have such laws, to do what the National Conference of Insurance Legislators is promoting nationally as the best way to combat distracted driving.”

Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina (IIANC), a statewide membership organization of nearly 950 Trusted Choice® independent insurance agencies who employ 9,000 individuals in communities throughout North Carolina.
