- Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp center fielder Braxton Lee
has been named the Southern League Player of the Week for the week of June 26-July 2, announced by the league office Monday morning.
Over this past week in six games, Lee has hit .571 (12-for-21) with a home run, six runs batted in, two doubles, a triple, and six runs scored. Four of the six games for Lee have been multi-hit contests, including four of his five games played with the Jumbo Shrimp.
Last Monday Lee was a Southern Leaguer for the Montgomery Biscuits, however that afternoon he was traded from the Tampa Bay Rays organization to the Miami Marlins along with right-handed pitcher Ethan Clark (now with Single-A Greensboro) in exchange for Marlins shortstop Adeiny Hechavarría.
He joined the Jumbo Shrimp on Wednesday for the start of their series with the Mobile BayBears, and Jacksonville is 5-0 during Lee's five-game hitting streak as Jacksonville's leadoff batter and center fielder. In that span, he is 11-for-20 with five runs, two doubles, one home run and six RBIs. As of Sunday afternoon, his .337 batting average, 52 runs and 95 hits all led the Southern League.
Overall, Lee is hitting .337 which is the top batting average in the Southern League. Lee has also hit three homers and driven in 22 runs. Lee also leads the Southern League in total hits (95), leads the league in runs scored (52), fourth in the league in on-base percentage (.403), and fourth in the league in at-bats (282). For his strong first half with the Montgomery Biscuits, Lee was named a 2017 Southern League North Division All-Star.
Lee, 23, is a native of Picayune, Mississippi, and was originally selected by the Rays in the 12th round of the 2014 draft out of Ole Miss.
Lee is now the third Jumbo Shrimp to earn weekly honors from the Southern League. Mike Kickham was the league's Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 22-28, and David Vidal was named the league's Player of the Week for the week of April 17-23.
The Jumbo Shrimp conclude their series with Mobile at 7:05 p.m. Monday, when Jacksonville right-hander Joe Gunkel (1-4) is scheduled to face BayBears right-hander Jake Jewell (4-4). Gates open early at 5:30 p.m., when the first 1,000 fans will receive a patriotic Jumbo Shrimp cap, courtesy of the Nimnicht Family Of Dealerships. Following the game is the Nimnicht Family Of Dealerships Independence Day Fireworks - the largest fireworks show of the season! The game is also presented by First Coast News.
