BILOXI, Miss. (August 16, 2018) - The Los Angeles Angels announced that left-handed pitcher Patrick Sandoval will join the Mobile BayBears from Class A Advanced Inland Empire. Sandoval, the No. 20 prospect in the Angels organization, is scheduled to make his Double-A debut in a road start Thursday night against the Biloxi Shuckers.
Sandoval, 21, was acquired by the Angels on July 26 in a trade with the Houston Astros for catcher Martin Maldonado. In three starts with Inland Empire, the southpaw tossed 14 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out 21 batters. Sandoval has not allowed a run since July 22, and he had a 33-inning scoreless streak earlier in the season from June 9 to July 16.
In 14 games, 10 starts, with Class A Quad Cities to begin the season, Sandoval went 7-1 with a 2.49 ERA. He was named a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star, and he was the circuit's Pitcher of the Week on May 6 and June 24. Sandoval was promoted to Buies Creek on June 27, where he went 2-0 with a 2.74 ERA in five games, three starts. He was also named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week on July 15.
The Mission Viejo, Calif., native was originally selected by the Astros in the 11th round of the 2015 MLB Draft out of Mission Viejo High School. In 55 career games, 41 starts, Sandoval has a 15-11 record with a 3.63 ERA and 258 strikeouts in 230 1/3 innings pitched.
In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Joe Gatto has been placed on the temporarily inactive list.
