LumberKings outlast Snappers in 5-4 win

BELOIT, WI (August 12, 2017) - For just the second time in 2017 the Clinton LumberKings dropped the Beloit Snappers at Harry Pohlman Field, taking a 5-4 win on Saturday night. Dimas Ojeda homered for Clinton, and the LumberKings (19-29, 50-65) then held on for the win.
Clinton built a 5-0 lead before the Snappers (26-21, 58-58) offense game alive late in the game. Bryson Brigman, with his 100th hit of the season, started the scoring with a two-run single to right.
The LumberKings scored their next two runs against Beloit starter Xavier Altamirano. Yojhan Quevedo scored Joseph Rosa with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning and Jhombeyker Morales scored Gareth Morgan with an RBI single in the top of the fourth.
Altamirano (7-4) was given the loss for Beloit for a five-inning outing in which he allowed four runs on nine hits, his first loss in four appearances against the LumberKings this season.
In the top of the sixth, Dimas Ojeda tallied the final score of the game for Clinton. Ojeda led off the inning with a solo home run to right, his third of the season.
Ljay Newsome countered with a strong five shutout inning outing, to earn his team leading seventh win of the season. Newsome (7-8) scattered five hits during his time out, walked none and struck out three.
Beloit began their charge in the bottom of the sixth inning. Miguel Mercedes slugged his 16th home run of the season for Beloit against LumberKings reliever Tyler Watson to make it 5-2.
In the bottom of the eighth, Luke Persico doubled home Josh Vidales to pull to within two.
Seth Elledge worked the ninth for Clinton and quickly found himself in trouble. Collin Theroux walked to lead-off the inning and moved to third on a J.C. Rodriguez double. Elledge then allowed Theroux to score on a ground out. With the tying run at third, Elledge struck out Perscico to end the game and record his third save of the season.
The LumberKings will conclude their four-game series with the Beloit Snappers on Sunday afternoon. Right-handed pitcher Steven Ridings (0-2, 5.40) will take the ball for Clinton and face the Snappers left-handed pitcher Zach Erwin (5-3, 2.27). Game time is slated for 2:00 PM (C.D.T.) with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI beginning at 1:45 PM, Erik Oas will be on the call.
The LumberKings return to Ashford University Field on Monday, August 14 with a four-game home stand against the Kane County Cougars.
