Clinton, IA (April 17, 2018) - Back in action after a three day break due to weather and a league scheduled off day the Clinton LumberKings held off a late Burlington Bees charge to claim a 3-2 win at Ashford University Field on Tuesday night. LumberKings (6-3) pitching combined to strikeout 16 Bees (4-4) to set an early season high for punchouts.
Clinton starter Oliver Jaskie made his second start of the season for the LumberKings and again registered eight strikeouts despite not working past the fifth inning.
The Bees struck first in the game. In the top of the second inning, Franklin Torres singled off Jaskie to lead-off the inning and scored three batters later on an RBI single from David MacKinnon. The run would be the only one allowed by Jaskie over his four innings of work in which he struck out eight and walked two.
Burlington starter Mitchell Traver protected the Bees 1-0 lead by navigating through bases loaded jams by the LumberKings in the second and third innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Clinton broke through against Traver (1-1) with two unearned runs to take the lead for good.
Ryan Costello added an RBI double to left center field in the bottom of the fifth inning that extended the LumberKings lead to 3-1.
Chris Castellanos followed Jaskie out of the pen to start the top of the fifth inning for Clinton. Over his 2.2 innings of work, the lefty struck out three while walking one and allowing just one hit. Castellanos (1-0) earned his first win of the season for his time out.
Collin Kober and Sam Delaplane worked the final 2.1 innings to preserve the win for Clinton. Delaplane earned his first save of the season by striking out the only two batters he faced to end a Bees rally in the top of the ninth in which they had pulled to within a run and had the tying run on base.
The LumberKings will play game two of their series with the Burlington Bees on Wednesday afternoon. Clinton will give the ball to right-hander Ryne Inman (1-0, 1.59) while the Bees will tap righty Isaac Mattson (2-0, 0.00) First pitch is scheduled for Thursday at 11:00 AM.
