Norwood Named Southern League Player of the Week

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp right fielder John Norwood has been named the Southern League Player of the Week for the week of July 10-16, announced by the league office Monday morning.

Over the past week in seven games, Norwood hit .370 (10-for-27) with three home runs, one double, five runs batted in, and four runs scored during his active seven-game hitting streak. His walk-off home run Wednesday against Biloxi was his third walk-off home run of the season for Jacksonville, and his 15 home runs are tied for second in the Southern League.

In his first Double-A season, Norwood is tied for third in the Southern League with 90 games played and is fourth with 147 total bases. He leads all South Division players in home runs, total bases, slugging percentage (.470), and on-base plus slugging (.827). A 2016 Florida State League All-Star and 2017 Southern League All-Star, he was named the starting right fielder for the South Division in the June 20 Southern League All-Star Game, which rain cancelled in Pensacola.

Norwood, 24, entered the season ranked as the Miami Marlins No. 29 prospect by Baseball America, and he is currently ranked No. 25 in the organization by MLB.com. A native of Peapack, New Jersey, he was signed by the Miami Marlins as a non-drafted agent in August 2014, two months after his go-ahead home run in the third game of the College World Series led Vanderbilt University to its first NCAA Championship.
Norwood is the fourth Jumbo Shrimp to earn weekly honors from the Southern League. David Vidal and Braxton Lee were named the league's Player of the Week for April 17-23 and June 26-July 2, respectively. Mike Kickham was the league's Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 22-28.
