KODAK, Tenn. (July 16, 2017) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced Sunday that right-handed pitcher Osmer Morales has been promoted from the Mobile BayBears to Triple-A Salt Lake. He is scheduled to make his first Triple-A debut in a start against Sacramento at 2:05 p.m. CT.
Morales, 24, made 16 starts with the BayBears in his first year at the Double-A level. He posted a 4-4 record and a 4.83 ERA, with 29 walks and 81 strikeouts. In his last home start, a July 5 win against Mississippi, Morales did not allow a hit through the first 4 2/3 innings. Morales struck out a season-high nine batters Monday at Birmingham, including six in a row from the third to fifth innings.
The Villa de Cura, Venezuela native signed with the Angels as a Minor League free agent this past offseason on November 14, 2016. He is currently the No. 20 prospect in the Angels organization, according to MLB Pipeline. Morales was previously a member of the Seattle Mariners, spending parts of seven seasons in the organization after signing his first professional contract on May 1, 2010.
Morales made his stateside debut in 2014 with the Rookie-level Arizona League Mariners after four years with Seattle's Venezuelan Summer League team. He pitched in a career-high 43 games with Class A Clinton in 2015, primarily as a reliever, and logged a career-high 116.2 innings between Clinton and Class A Advanced Bakersfield the following year. Morales was named California League Pitcher of the Week on June 26, 2016, after throwing five hitless innings in Bakersfield's combined no-hitter against Modesto on June 24.
