Clinton, IA (July 30, 2018) - Clinton LumberKings first basemen and 2018 All-Star Ryan Costello has been traded by the Seattle Mariners to the Minnesota Twins. Costello, who was leading the Midwest League at the time of the trade in home runs, RBIs, games played, and extra base-hits, was packaged along with right-handed pitcher Chase De Jong for left-handed pitcher Zach Duke.
Costello, 22, was the LumberKings everyday first basemen this year after being assigned to Clinton to open the 2018 season. The Seattle Mariners drafted him in the 31st round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of Central Connecticut State University. At the time of the trade Costello led the Midwest League in several offensive statistical categories and was one of four LumberKings to be selected to the Western Division Midwest League All-Star team.
The season for Costello in Clinton featured several career firsts and career highs. He collected his first career multi home run game on May 25th against the Cedar Rapids Kernels in Cedar Rapids and then collected his second in a dramatic LumberKings win to close out the first half in Beloit on June 17th. In the win over the Beliot Snappers, Costello hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to tie the game and then the game winning grand slam in the ninth. The grand slam was the first of his career and one of his Midwest League leading 16 home runs and 70 RBIs.
Costello is likely to begin his time in the Twins organization with the High-A Ft. Myers Miracles of the Florida State League.
