Five-Run Eighth Sparks Sweep of Storm

April 28, 2013

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Hanley Ramirez went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in his encore performance in Rancho Cucamonga, but it was Ryan Mount who stole the show for the Quakes, as they completed a three-game sweep of the Lake Elsinore Storm with a 7-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at LoanMart Field.

Down a run with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, Mount ripped a single into right field to bring home Angelo Songco and Darnell Sweeney, giving the Quakes a 6-5 lead against Storm reliever Matt Lollis (1-2).

Three batters later, Chris O'Brien sent a sacrifice fly to right field to score O'Koyea Dickson, capping off an eighth inning that saw the Quakes score five runs on four hits, three walks and two Lake Elsinore errors.

Michael Thomas followed that up with a scoreless ninth, earning his California League-best eighth save of the season.

Freddie Cabrera picked up the victory in his first appearance of the 2013 season with the Quakes, striking out three and allowing one run in two innings of work.

After taking a 2-1 lead into the fifth inning, the Quakes surrendered a pair of runs in the top of the frame on a single to Duanel Jones, an RBI triple B.J. Guinn and an RBI base knock to Travis Jankowski.

Quakes starter Garrett Gould avoided his third loss of the season after allowing three earned runs on four hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings pitched.

The Quakes had chances early, receiving lead-off hits in the second, third and fourth innings on their way to a 2-1 lead. Back-to-back doubles from Ramirez and O'Koyea Dickson in the third gave the Quakes their first advantage of the game.

Ramirez smashed a double into the gap in right-center to cash in O'Brien and came around one batter later on Dickson's two-bagger that tight-roped the left field line.

Sitting even in the standings at 12-12, the Quakes get a breather on Monday and will return to action on Tuesday as they make the trek to Banner Island Ballpark for a three-game set with the Stockton Ports. Ross Stripling (1-0, 2.49 ERA) is the scheduled starter for Rancho and he will be facing a Stockton squad led by right-hander Andres Avila (0-3, 9.19 ERA).

Following the three-game series with the Ports and a four-pack with the Giants in San Jose, the Quakes will return to Rancho for a trio against the Inland Empire 66ers. Join us at LoanMart Field on Tuesday night for Healthy RC Recycle Tuesday. Fans who bring 10 CRV eligible bottles and/or cans to the ballpark will receive a free Club Seat, thanks to the City of Rancho Cucamonga and the Healthy RC Program.
