Lake Elsinore, CA- After a brilliant performance from Rancho starter Jordan Sheffield, Quincy Latimore blasted a two-run, go-ahead home run in the top of the ninth inning to give the Quakes a 4-3 win over Lake Elsinore on Sunday night.
Sheffield threw six strong, shutout innings against the Storm in his third start of the season for the Quakes. Over the six frames, he only allowed three hits while striking out eight and walking two.
The offense backed him early as DJ Peters knocked in Zach McKinstry in the top of the first inning with an RBI double to make it 1-0.
In the third inning, the Quakes tacked on with small ball. Brandon Montgomery singled to lead-off the inning and stole second. He then moved to third when McKinstry grounded out to second base and scored on an Omar Estevez sacrifice fly into left.
The 2-0 lead held until the seventh until Sven Schueller came on for Rancho and allowed three runs to the Storm. Peter Van Gansen doubled home the first run before Ruddy Giron grounded out to short to knock in the game-tying run. Michael Gettys then grounded a go-ahead RBI single to center against Nolan Long, but the run was charged to Schueller.
In the top of the ninth inning, Keibert Ruiz singled with one-out off of Gerardo Reyes. That brought up Latimore, who blasted the two-run, go-ahead home run to left to give the Quakes the lead.
Reyes (3-3) was handed the loss and the blown save, allowing the two runs in one inning of work.
Andrew Istler then entered for the Quakes and worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his 13th save of the season.
Andrew Thurman (1-0) took home the win with a scoreless top of the ninth inning out of the bullpen for the Quakes.
Following a day off on Monday, Rancho Cucamonga (34-23, 70-57) and Lake Elsinore (23-34, 58-69) will meet up again on Tuesday, August 22nd, for the first game of the three-game series at 7:05 pm.
