Rancho Cucamonga, CA -Garrett Kennedy's solo home run snapped a fourth-inning tie, putting the Quakes ahead to stay in a 4-2 win over the Lake Elsinore Storm on Tuesday night at LoanMart Field.
Tied at 2-2 in the fifth, Kennedy took Storm starter Joey Lucchesi deep to right-center field for his first homer of the year, a solo-blast to give the Quakes the lead for good at 3-2.
Chris Powell and Tony Gonsolin combined to work the final five and a third innings, as they held the Storm to just two hits the rest of the way, helping Rancho to win their fourth consecutive game overall.
Taking part in the Rancho win were a pair of Dodgers' rehabbers, as Adrián González and Logan Forsythe both started for the Quakes. Gonzalez went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks and Forsythe went hitless in four trips to the dish. The duo is also scheduled to be in the lineup on Wednesday, as the Quakes host the Storm at LoanMart Field.
Quakes' starter Yadier Álvarez gave up a pair of runs in the second and was chased before getting the final out of the fourth inning. A two-run double by Carlos Belen gave the Storm a 2-0 lead in the second.
Rancho responded in the bottom of the inning though, as with runners at second and third and only one out, Kennedy hit a hard grounder that went off the glove and through the legs of second baseman Peter Van Gansen, scoring both runners and evening the game at 2-2.
After Kennedy's solo-shot in the fourth off Storm starter Joey Lucchesi (3-1), the Quakes added their final run in the sixth, as Luke Raley doubled and eventually scored on a Lake Elsinore error, making it 4-2.
Powell (2-0), who retired nine of the ten hitters he faced, earned the win, while Gonsolin worked around a pair of walks in the eighth and a leadoff single in the ninth to earn his first save of the year.
In addition to scheduled appearances by Gonzalez and Forsythe, Wednesday is our first Terra Vista Animal Hospital Bark in the Ballpark, as fans can bring their four-legged friends to the ballpark. Pet Passes are just $3 and proceeds will go to the Rancho Cucamonga Animal Shelter. The Quakes (22-17) will send Dennis Santana (2-3) to the bump, as he'll take on Lake Elsinore's Pedro Avila (0-2). Game time is 7:00pm. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
