Quakes Drop Second Straight as Rally Falls Short

Home runs lead Modesto to game three win
September 4, 2016

Rancho Cucamonga, CA- The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes dropped their second straight game to the Modesto Nuts, losing 4-3 at LoanMart Field on Sunday.

The home run ball plagued Rancho today, as Modesto hit two home runs in the seventh inning to break the 1-1 tie.

Dodger's rehabber Andre Ethier went 0-for-4 and played seven innings of left field.

Rancho Cucamonga struck first for a run in the second inning. Matt Beaty led off the inning with a double, and came around to score after Johan Mieses ripped a single to left field.

Modesto came back to tie the game in the fifth. Luis Jean reached second base with one out after Mieses lost the ball in sun in center field. The next hitter, Emerson Jimenez, lined a single to left field to score Jean to make it a 1-1 game.

The Nuts jumped out to their first lead of the day in the seventh. A two-out, two-run home run by Jimenez, his first of the season, gave Modesto a 3-1 lead. Wes Rogers followed up Jimenez' blast by going back-to-back with a solo home run to give the Nuts a 4-1 advantage.

The Quakes came back for two runs in the eighth inning. Erick Mejia reached on an error, and Mike Ahmed singled to put two on with nobody out. Beaty followed by grooving a two-run RBI single, extending his team-lead to 88 RBIs this season, to pull Rancho to within one at 4-3.

Helmis Rodriguez (5-9) earned the win for Modesto. He pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned). Marco Magliaro recorded two outs in the eighth before Luis Niebla closed it out in the ninth for his 17th save.

David Reid-Foley (1-3) took the loss for the Quakes, after allowing three earned runs on three hits in two innings. Adam Bray started for the Quakes and received the no-decision. He allowed just three hits and one unearned run, striking out four. Luis De Paula and Alex Hermeling each pitched scoreless innings.

The Quakes (37-32, 79-60) conclude their series and the 2016 regular season against the Modesto Nuts on Monday. The Quakes will send right-hander and major league rehabber Brandon McCarthy (0-1, 5.40 ERA) to the mound while the Nuts will counter with left-hander right-hander Jack Wynkoop (7-92 2.50 ERA). McCarthy is making his fourth start in a Quakes uniform this season, after he rehabbed with Rancho Cucamonga back in July. Ethier is also expected to start on Monday.
