Quakes Top Dodgers in Exhibition Game

March 28, 2013

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Angelo Songco's RBI single in the last of the seventh inning, gave the Quakes a 4-3 walk-off win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in a special seven-inning exhibition match-up at The Epicenter.

Thursday's sold-out crowd of 5,508 watched the big-league club rally for three runs in the top of the seventh inning, only to see their single-A affiliate scratch out a run in their last at-bat for an exciting finish to a magical day.

Songco helped the Quakes take an early lead in the first inning, as he was one of four Quakes to single off of Dodgers' starter Stephen Fife. After Songco's single loaded the bases with one out, Jonathan Garcia followed with a two-run single to give Rancho a 2-0 advantage.

The Quakes took advantage of the third Dodger error of the night in the third inning, as Paul Hoenecke reached on a throwing error by Fife and later scored on Jeremy Rathjen's two-out single, giving the Quakes a 3-0 lead.

The Dodgers were slow to get going offensively, as Quakes' starter Chris Reed tossed three no-hit innings to start the game, allowing just a walk over his three frames.

Los Angeles didn't get their first base hit until Omar Luna and Matt Wallach had back-to-back singles in the fifth, but that rally was put to rest when Quakes' right-hander Ross Stripling fanned Bladimir Franco to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, the Dodgers got going, as Adrian Gonzalez singled to start the inning, then moved to second on a single by Luis Cruz. Yasiel Puig followed with a come-backer to Quakes' reliever Pedro Baez, who threw errantly to second base, leaving the bases loaded with no outs. Luna brought home Gonzalez with a sac fly to right, bringing the Dodgers to within a pair at 3-1.

Baez then walked Matt Wallach to reload the bases, before striking out Franco for the second out.

Carl Crawford, who was hitless in three at-bats prior to the seventh, redeemed himself in a big way, as his two-out single to left plated two runs, tying the game at 3-3. Baez was lifted in favor of Michael Thomas, who got out of the inning and eventually earned the win.

Former Quake Eric Eadington struggled a bit in the seventh, as he allowed a lead-off hit to pinch hitter Leo Rodriguez. With one out, Eadington walked Corey Seager, then fired a wild pitch, putting two in scoring position with only one out for Songco, who delivered the game-winner to right field.

Thursday's exhibition game, presented by San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino was a fantastic event, with Dodger Legend Tommy Lasorda being honored in the pregame by Mayor Dennis Michael and the Rancho Cucamonga City Council. The Quakes will look to carry the momentum to next Thursday, as they host the Lake Elsinore Storm in the first game of the California League's 2013 season.
