San Bernardino, CA- Two solo home runs were not enough on the offensive side for the Quakes in a 5-2 loss to Inland Empire on Friday night.
The home runs book-ended the game, with Zach Reks blasting a solo home run on the first pitch of the game and Omar Estevez crushing his fourth home run of the season in the top of the ninth inning.
Reks not only hit his second home run as a Quake, but recorded his sixth multi-hit game in nine starts with Rancho. He is now hitting .486 (18-for-37).
Parker Curry made his first start of the season for the Quakes on the mound and he could not keep the ball in the ballpark.
Leading 1-0 into the bottom of the first inning, Curry surrendered a double and a single to open the frame before Jordan Zimmermann launched a three-run home run to left to put the 66ers on top for good.
Inland Empire tacked on in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly from Zimmermann and a solo home run by Jared Walsh to make it 5-1.
Curry (1-5) was finished after just three and a third innings, yielding five runs on five hits while striking out five and walking one.
Daniel Corcino was strong out of the bullpen for the Quakes with three and two-thirds innings. He only allowed two hits while striking out five and walking one in his outing.
Jose Rodriguez (8-11) earned the win for Inland Empire with six brilliant innings. He struck out a career-high 13 batters, including eight straight from the fourth inning through the first two outs of the sixth. He retired the last 10 men he faced.
Rancho Cucamonga (29-19, 65-53) will take on Inland Empire (25-23, 55-63) on Saturday, August 12th, at 6:05 PM for game two of the three-game series. Rancho is expected to turn to left-hander Caleb Ferguson (8-4), while the 66ers will send lefty Nate Bertness (0-0) to the mound.
