Barons Best BayBears to Take Series
HOOVER, Ala. - In the rubber game of their five-game series on Monday night at Regions Park, the Birmingham Barons used a 10-run, 13-hit onslaught to drive out the BayBears in a 10-3, series-clinching victory.
Birmingham (13-11) rocked Wade Miley (0-1) with six runs on six hits in 4.2 innings. They picked up a run in the first as Brandon Short reached on an error and eventually scored on a groundout off the bat of Josh Phegley.
Southpaw Charlie Leesman (3-0) allowed three runs in his five innings as the BayBears (14-9) touched him up in the second to tie the game. Taylor Harbin singled and scored on a fielder's choice groundball from Evan Frey to make it 1-1.
In the fourth, the Barons gained the edge once again with Ozzie Lewis doubling and touching home after a sac fly from Drew Garcia. The BayBears carried their first lead of the night when they picked up a pair in the top of the fifth. Jake Elmore's sac fly and Paul Goldschmidt's RBI single gave the BayBears a 3-2 cushion.
Miley gave it up quickly as the Barons struck for four in the bottom of the fifth. Kenny Williams put the Barons on top with a two-run homer while Tyler Kuhn added a two-run double to bring home Phegley and Lewis.
Birmingham added four more to their total in the seventh and eighth innings against Josh Ellis. Two-run singles from Lewis and Phegley finished the scoring as the Barons grabbed a seven-run extension.
The BayBears are back home on Tuesday night with a 7:05 p.m. start against the Tennessee Smokies as southpaw Patrick Corbin (0-1) starts for the BayBears against right-hander Alberto Cabrera (3-0).
