SALEM, VA (Sunday, April 8) - The Salem Red Sox took a bit of revenge in the nightcap of their doubleheader on Sunday, scoring a 2-1 win in eight innings over the Buies Creek Astros at Haley Toyota Field in Salem.

The Sox (3-1) bounced back after dropping the first game of the twinbill 1-0 in eight innings. Buies Creek (1-3) only mustered two hits in the loss, and struck out in five of their last eight plate appearances. Salem earned the series win over Buies Creek in the first series of the 2018 season.

Salem opened the scoring in the bottom of the first against Astros starter Brandon Bailey, who walked Santiago Espinal to start the frame. Brett Netzer sliced a single to center, leaving runners at the corners. With one out, Ryan Scott lifted a sacrifice fly to right-center to plate Espinal and give Salem a 1-0 lead.

Buies Creek drew level in the top of the third. Sox starter Hildemaro Requena surrendered a leadoff double to Anibal Sierra, who scooted to third on a passed ball by catcher Nick Sciortino. Carlos Canelon took advantage, hitting a bouncer to short that plated Sierra and tied the game at 1-1. The Sox got the bases loaded with only one away in the bottom of the sixth, but reliever Carlos Sierra (L, 0-1) induced a 3-2-3 double play to end the frame. Neither team scored again in regulation, sending the game to extra innings.

The Astros were unable to score in the top of the eighth, and Salem began the bottom of the frame with Netzer on second. Dalbec lifted a fly to deep right for the first out, but Netzer was able to move up to third base. Scott then hit a bouncer to the right side for a single, and Netzer raced home with the winning run.

Requena took a no-decison, allowing one run (unearned) on one hit and one walk in four innings while whiffing two. Jordan Weems allowed a hit and two walks and struck out one over two frames. Algenis Martinez (W, 1-0) earned the win with two shutout innings from the bullpen, walking one and racking up four strikeouts.

The Sox will open a three-game series against the Wilmington Blue Rocks Monday night, with righty Tanner Houck getting the ball for Salem against Blue Rocks righty Arnoldo Hernandez. First pitch from Haley Toyota Field is at 7:05 p.m., and the pregame show with Ben Gellman and Suzie Cool begins at 6:45 p.m.
