SALEM, Virginia (April 15, 2019) - The Salem Red Sox faced the top-ranked Wood Ducks and the coldest start yet on Monday night at Haley Toyota Field, falling to Down East in the series opener 5-2.
How it Happened
* Down East's Jason Bahr cruised through 7 innings of 2-hit ball in his first start of the season. Previously against the Red Sox, Bahr tossed a five-inning shutout.
* The Wood Ducks scored in the opening frame after Eric Jenkins led off with a triple and scored on an RBI single from Bubba Thompson. Down East extended its lead 2-0 in the 4^th, Yohel Pozo pushing a run across on a sacrifice fly.
* Salem connected in the bottom of the frame when Ryan Fitzgerald drilled a double to deep right field to score Victor Acosta and cut the lead 2-1.
* The Woodies answered again in the 5^th inning, stringing two runs together on three base hits to re-extend their lead, 4-1. A final run would cross in the 8^th inning from a Melvin Novoa force out to steam ahead 5-1.
* Jarren Duran led the last call with a single, Ryan Fitzgerald drew a one-out walk and Garrett Benge pushed Duran home with a sacrifice groundout to cut the lead 5-2 where the final score would settle.
