San Antonio settled for a split of its series with Frisco following a 3-1 loss Sunday evening in front of 4,721 at Wolff Stadium.
On the bump for the Missions Sunday was right-hander Jacob Nix, who entered play sporting an impressive 1.79 ERA. The RoughRiders came out swinging against the talented hurler, plating the game's first run two batters into the game as Michael De Leon followed Jose Cardona's leadoff double with a single to right center.
Nix shook off the quick Frisco start by allowing just one more hit through the fourth. However, in the fifth, Frisco pushed the lead to 2-0 when Juremi Profar singled in Michael O'Neill.
Nix would pitch into the eighth, where catcher Chuck Moorman put the 'Riders up 3-0 with a homer to left.
On most nights, Nix (2-3) would have been in good shape for a win, having allowed just three runs over seven and a third innings. Unfortunately, for Nix, his mound opponent, Chris Jensen was a little better. Having just arrived from Triple-A Round Rock, Jensen (1-0) allowed just one run on four hits and two walks, while striking out four over six innings.
The Missions' lone tally Sunday came in Jensen's final inning when Kyle Overstreet singled with the bases loaded. However, Jensen avoided further trouble when he got Austin Allen to bang into an inning-ending double play.
Tyler Davis and Reed Garrett (15th save) combined to allow just two hits over the final three innings.
San Antonio (21-15, 63-43) begins an important seven-game road trip Monday evening with the first of three against first half champion Corpus Christi (22-15, 65-41). First pitch from Whataburger Field is slated for 7:05 PM. Logan Allen (10-4, 2.59) will get the ball for the Missions in the series opener, while the Hooks counter with fellow southpaw Framber Valdez (3-4, 4.13).
