South Bend, IN: The bats of the South Bend Cubs came alive on Saturday night in a 11-0 game two victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps in which the offense and pitching gelled together for the shutout.

Two Cubs had career days in South Bend on Saturday. Second baseman Christian Donahue extended his hitting streak to seven games with a four hit game against the Whitecaps. It is the first four hit night in the career of the Hawaii native. The alumni of the Oregon State Beavers scored three of South Bend's 11 runs in the game.
Jhonny Bethencourt provided the runs batted in for the Cubs with a career high five. Bethencourt found the gap twice with a pair of doubles and added a single. The Venezuela native came into Saturday with 10 RBI in 40 games. He added five in just seven innings tonight.
Rafael Narea and Miguel Amaya added two hits each. The South Bend RBI were courtesy of Zach Davis, Bethencourt, Jared Young, Austin Filiere, and Narea.
The hitting gave Erich Uelmen all he needed on the mound to earn his third victory of the season. Uelmen now improves to 3-4 on the campaign and finished Saturday with a season high eight strikeouts. The Las Vegas native skillfully mixed his pitches and dealt first pitch strikes continually to West Michigan. The early count strikes allowed Uelmen to use his slider away in the zone for many swings and misses.
The starting pitching continues to be the strong point in the makeup of the South Bend Cubs. After Cory Abbott earned the win while striking out five last night, Uelmen delivered tonight.
Yapson Gomez and Brendan King added a combined four scoreless innings of relief out of the bullpen.
With the lopsided victory, South Bend improves to 21-26 on the season, getting back to just five games under .500. They will have the opportunity to win the series against West Michigan tomorrow on a special Sunday time at 7:05 p.m. Left hander Ricky Tyler Thomas is scheduled to take the ball for the Cubs tomorrow in game three.
