Spokane Indians Toss Combined No-Hitter in 4-0 Win

Spokane, Wash. - History was made in Vancouver last night as Indians pitchers Anderson Pilar and Brayan Castillo combined for a no-hitter in Spokane's 4-0 win over the Canadians. It was the team's first no-no since an 11-inning combined no-hitter against the AquaSox in Everett on August 10, 2014, and just the 18th no-hitter in franchise history.

Pilar put together the performance of a lifetime even before Spokane polished off the historic feat. The right-hander cruised through seven brilliant innings (108 pitches/68 strikes) against the Canadians, setting a new career-high with 13 strikeouts while allowing just three Vancouver hitters to reach base on walks. A native of Villa Isabella in the Dominican Republic, Pilar improved to 7-2 with a 2.06 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across three levels this season. Originally signed by the Colorado Rockies as an international free agent in 2015, the 25-year-old has a 27-17 record and 2.73 ERA in 174 career minor league appearances (14 starts).

"Pilar featured his cut fastball and slider and knew right where both pitches were going.," said Indians pitching coach Ryan Kibler. "Hitters couldn't get the barrel to pitches in the strike zone and were chasing pitches off the plate. [Catcher] Jesus Ordonez recognized what was working and helped Pilar navigate through it."

Castillo picked up right where Pilar left off, tossing a clean eighth inning before working around a leadoff walk in the ninth and closing out the no-hitter with a flyball to Benny Montgomery in left field. Robby Martin Jr. provided all the offense Spokane would need with a two-run blast in the second while catcher Jesus Ordonez, who called a masterful game behind the plate, connected on his first High-A home run later in the same frame. Third baseman Ben Sems provided the final margin with an RBI single in the top of the seventh.

Spokane's no-hitter was the second nine-inning no-no in the Northwest League this season (Eugene vs. Everett, July 4th) and the 11th nine-inning no-hitter overall in Minor League Baseball this season. A full list of all no-hitters in Spokane history is available by CLICKING HERE.
