Mets dominate Hammerheads 11-1 in series opener

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (April 30, 2024) – The St. Lucie Mets returned to Clover Park in dominate fashion, walloping the Jupiter Hammerheads 11-1 on Tuesday night in the series opener. The Mets put together a five-run third inning and then broke the game open with a five-run seventh inning.

The Mets put together a five-run third inning and then broke the game open with a five-run seventh inning. Left fielder Chris Suero went 2 for 4 with a two-run homer, walk, four RBI and three runs scored. Nick Morabito reached base four times. Starter Wyatt Hudepohl pitched 5.0 dazzling innings with no earned runs and eight strikeouts.

Boston Baro, the Mets eighth round pick last season, made his team debut and hit a two-out RBI single off Collin Lowe in the second inning to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.

The Mets loaded the bases with no outs in the third. Jesus Baez lined out to second but Jordan McCants threw the ball away into his dugout trying to double Colin Houck off first base. Two runs scored on the error to make it 3-0.

Morabito followed with a sharp RBI single for a 4-0 lead. The hit extended his hitting streak to seven games. Suero then launched a 418-foot two-run homer over the Corona Beach House to make it 6-0. It was Suero’s second homer of the season and he extended his hitting streak to eight games.

Hudepohl was impressive on the mound from the jump. He only gave up one hit through the first three innings while striking out four. He struck out three more in the fourth. Hudepohl worked around a pair of hits in the fifth and departed with a 6-1 lead to earn the win.

The Mets broke the game wide open with five runs against Euri Montero in the seventh inning. Suero socked a two-run single with the bases loaded for an 8-1 lead. Yohario Cuevas added RBI single. Suero scored on a wild pitch and Diego Mosquera plated Baro on a ground out for the final tally of 11-1.

Jimmy Loper pitched 2.0 scoreless innings behind Hudepohl. Miguel Alfonseca and Layonel Ovalles each pitched a 1-2-3 inning to finish out the game.

Lowe took the loss. He gave up six runs over 3.0 innings. The Hammerheads seven-game winning streak was snapped. The Mets have won their last four home games.

The Mets (10-12) and Hammerheads 15-7() play the second game of their series at Clover Park on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m.
