JUPITER, Fla. (May 5, 2022) – The St. Lucie Mets lost the handle on 3-0 ninth inning lead but survived to beat the Palm Beach Cardinals 4-3 in 11 innings on Thursday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

After the teams played a scoreless 10th, the Mets broke through for the winning run in the 11th. Omar De Los Santos started the inning on second base and stole third. He came in to score on a sac fly to center field by Albert Suarez to make it 4-3.

The Cardinals moved the tying run to third base on the second pitch of the bottom of the 11th when Mets reliever Joshua Cornielly threw a wild pitch. However, Cornielly struck out the first two batters of the inning and got Adanson Cruz to fly out to right field to end the game.

Cornielly also pitched the 10th inning and stranded the free runner at second base to force a second extra inning. Cornielly picked up his first win by firing 2.0 hitless innings with a walk and three strikeouts.

The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when De Los Santos stole first and second and scored on a Justin Guerrera single.

Jose Rivera hit his first home run of the year in the seventh to make it 2-0 Mets. Drake Osborn followed with a double and he scored on Kevin Villavicencio’s hit to put the Mets up 3-0.

In the bottom of the ninth inning reliever Dan Goggin got a pickoff for the first out of the inning. However, he walked three of the next four and also gave up a hit. The Cardinals took a bases loaded walk to make it 3-1, then grounded out to bring home a run to make it 3-2. With two outs and the tying run at third base, Hansel Otamendi hit a 2-2 pitch from Daniel Juarez into left field to tie the game 3-3.

The comeback by the Cardinals spoiled what would have been a victory for Mets starter Luis Moreno, who was excellent. Moreno pitched 6.2 shutout innings on just 86 pitches. He scattered five singles, struck out three and induced two double play balls.

The Mets (17-7) and Cardinals (9-15) play the fourth game of their series on Friday. First pitch from Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
