Hammerheads explode for 10 runs, cruise past Mets

Malm goes 3 for 4 with pair of doubles in loss

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (September 2, 2022) – The Jupiter Hammerheads bashed out 16 hits in a 10-5 win against the St. Lucie Mets at Clover Park on Friday.

Jupiter scored six runs in the top of the first inning against two Mets pitchers. Joe Mack, Jacob Berry, Jake Thompson and Jorge Caballero strung together consecutive run-scoring hits against Mets starter Calvin Ziegler (0-5).

Ziegler was taken out after striking out Cameron Barstad on his 31st pitch of the inning. Reliever Paul Gervase surrendered a RBI triple to Carlos Santiago and a RBI single to Yiddi Cappe before getting the last out of the first.

Mack launched a leadoff homer in the second inning for a 7-0 Jupiter lead. Barstad added a run-scoring ground out off Gervase later in the inning to make it 8-0.

The Mets slowly clawed back in the game but never got closer than four runs. Brad Malm hit a two-out RBI double in the second inning to make it 8-2. He double home another run against Jupiter starter Justin Fall in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 9-4.

Raul Beracierta knocked a RBI double in the fifth to make it 9-5.

Jupiter relievers Evan Taylor and Josh White prevented a comeback by holding the Mets to one hit over the final three innings.

Fall (7-7) got the win. He scattered eight hits over six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) and striking out seven.

Ziegler took the loss. He gave up five runs and four hits in 0.2 innings. It was the most hits and runs he allowed in a start this year.

Malm went 3 for 4 with the two doubles and a single.

Mack and Berry had three hits apiece. Berry reached base five times.

Caballero went 4 for 5 and was hit by a pitch to reach base five times.

The Mets (69-53, 29-28) and Hammerheads (59-62, 25-32) play the fourth game of their series at Clover Park on Saturday. It’s Paint the Park Pink Night. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and the Mets will wear pink jerseys that will be auctioned off to raise funds for breast cancer awareness. Fans can bid at www.stluciemets.com/auction.
