PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – The New York Mets have announced that two-time Cy Young award winner Jacob deGrom will begin a rehab assignment with the St. Lucie Mets on Sunday.

The St. Lucie Mets are hosting the Jupiter Hammerheads at Clover Park at 6:10 p.m. for their annual Independence Day weekend fireworks celebration. Tickets are available on www.stluciemts.com and the ticket office will open at noon on Sunday.

DeGrom (stress reaction in scapula) threw live batting practice on Wednesday at Clover Park and will now progress to game action. He last appeared in a regular season MLB game on July 7, 2021. In 15 starts last year he went 7-2 with 1.08 ERA and 146 strikeouts in 92 innings.

DeGrom, 33, is a four-time All Star and winner of back-to-back NL Cy Young awards in 2018 and 2019. He is one of just three pitchers to win multiple Cy Youngs and the Rookie of the Year, joining Tom Seaver and Justin Verlander.

This will be the second year in a row deGrom has made a rehab appearance with St. Lucie. He made waves in May of 2021 when he overpowered the Palm Beach Cardinals for 3.0 hitless innings, striking out eight of the 10 batters he faced.

DeGrom was selected by the Mets in the ninth round of the 2010 draft out of Stetson University. After missing 2011 due to Tommy John surgery, deGrom rose quickly through the Mets system. He went 4-0 with a 2.41 ERA is his six career High-A starts with St. Lucie from 2012-13 before moving up to Double-A Bighamton.

DeGrom debuted with New York in 2014 and went on to win the NL Rookie of the Year Award.
