Mastrobuoni’s Grand Slam Sends Tacoma to 6-3 Victory

TACOMA, WA (August 28, 2026) — Miles Mastrobuoni smacked a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning to lift the Tacoma Rainiers (27-28/60-70) to a 6-3 victory over the Salt Lake Bees (19-35/58-70) at Cheney Stadium on Friday night. TACOMA, WA (August 28, 2026) — Miles Mastrobuoni smacked a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning to lift the Tacoma Rainiers (27-28/60-70) to a 6-3 victory over the Salt Lake Bees (19-35/58-70) at Cheney Stadium on Friday night. The bullpen was dominant again, holding Salt Lake scoreless across 3.1 innings of work. Leo Rivas hit his third home run with Tacoma this season in the second inning while he and Connor Joe walked twice in the contest.

Tacoma opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Connor Joe worked a five-pitch walk to lead off the frame and two batters later, Leo Rivas (3) crushed a two-run home run over the trees beyond the right field wall to give the Rainiers an early 2-0 lead.

Salt Lake responded with three runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead. With one out, Arol Vera beat out an infield single and advanced to second when Nelson Rada walked. After Pablo Reyes flied out, Kyren Paris lined a single into center field, pushing Rada up to third and bringing home Vera to make it 2-1. Paris stole second to get two runners in scoring position. Jeimer Candelario then laced a single into shallow center, scoring Rada and Paris, giving the Bees a 3-2 lead.

Nolan Kingham settled in after the third, retiring nine of the final 10 batters he faced. Kingham finished the night with seven strikeouts, his most in a Rainiers uniform. It kick-started a stretch of 12 consecutive Bees retired from the second out of the fourth inning through the first out of the eighth inning.

Tacoma rallied with two outs to retake the lead in the sixth inning. Victor Labrada started the rally with a double to right field and Rivas worked a walk to put two runners on. The pair executed a double steal to get into scoring position and the next batter, Willie MacIver, drew a walk to load the bases. Then, Miles Mastrobuoni (3) smoked the 3-2 pitch over the right field wall. His second career grand slam gave the Rainiers a 6-3 lead.

After getting the final out of the sixth, Cooper Criswell, pitching for the third time on his Major League rehab assignment, tossed a perfect seventh inning before turning the ball over to Nick Garcia. Garcia navigated around a pair of singles to keep Salt Lake off the board in the eighth.

Seth Shuman was called upon to close out the game in the ninth inning. He set the Bees down in order, locking down Tacoma’s 6-3 win Friday to earn his second save with the Rainiers.

The Rainiers look to secure the series victory Saturday night. LHP Peyton Alford will make his first start of the season to lead off a bullpen game for Tacoma. First pitch is set for 6:05 PM.

POSTGAME NOTES:

  • INF Miles Mastrobuoni hit a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning Friday, marking Tacoma’s fifth grand-slam of the season…it’s his second career grand slam with the first coming on August 2, 2022, with Triple-A Durham…it’s the first go-ahead grand slam by a Rainiers hitter in the sixth inning-or-later since Jake Scheiner hit one in the sixth inning on June 3, 2023, against Sacramento.

  • INF Leo Rivas hit his third home run with Tacoma on Friday night, clubbing a two-run homer in the second inning…the home run was hit 102.6 miles per hour, the third-hardest hit home run Rivas has hit since 2021 (when tracking data became available), and his hardest hit ball since his first Major League home run on September 1, 2025, at Tampa Bay, which was hit 104.2 miles per hour.

  • INF Ryan Bliss tallied his 31st double of the season in the third inning, his second season with at least 30 doubles in his career (also: 34 doubles in 2023)...Bliss is the first Rainiers player to collect 31 doubles in a season since Jarred Kelenic hit 32 in 2022 and just the fourth Rainiers hitter to hit 31 doubles since 2015.

  • INF/OF Connor Joe extended his on-base streak 25 games with a pair of walks Friday, the longest by a Rainiers hitter this season…it’s the longest streak since Harry Ford reached safely in 28 consecutive contests from July 18-August 30…since the streak started, Joe’s 24 walks and .467 OBP ranks fourth in the PCL.
