Vermont Sweeps Nashua 6-2, 10-0 Wednesday

NASHUA, NH --- Andrew Bergeron went 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run homer in the opener, while M.J. Metz was 2-for-2 with a two-run homer in the nightcap as the Vermont Lake Monsters swept a FCBL doubleheader over the Nashua Silver Knights Wednesday night at Holman Stadium.
Vermont got a run top of the second inning of game one on a leadoff single, a walk, hit batter and throwing error on a fielder’s choice error. The Lake Monsters added three more runs in the fifth on a Sky Rahill (Salisbury U) RBI single and pair of run scoring fielding errors for a 4-0 lead.
Starter Brett Hansen (Vanderbilt) tossed four scoreless innings before allowing a two-out, two-run double to Connor Hujsak in the bottom of fifth, but Lake Monsters quickly restored the four-run lead in the sixth on Bergeron’s (Georgetown) two-run homer to left.
Hansen allowed the two runs on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts over five innings to earn the game one win, while Rahill was 2-for-4 with a run, double and RBI.
The Lake Monsters started strong in the nightcap with eight runs on eight hits over the first two innings. Jacob Bullard (Stetson) gave Vermont a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run double to leftcenter before the Lake Monsters added six runs in the second including a Chris Brown (UConn) RBI triple and a M.J. Metz (Trinity U) two-run homer, his third of season, for a 8-0 advantage.
Game two starter Porter Jordheim (Harvard) allowed one hit with three walks and five strikeouts over three scoreless innings. After Vermont took the 10-0 lead in the top of the fifth, Francis Ferguson (Eastern Nazarene) need to throw just four pitches for a 1-2-3 bottom fifth to clinch the five-inning, 10-run “mercy rule” win.
Pat DeSalvo (Georgetown) went 2-for-2 with a run and RBI in game two for Vermont, while Justin Rubin had a fifth-inning RBI double in his Lake Monsters debut. Rubin, who has committed to the University of Virginia this fall, hit .558 (43x77) with 53 R and 25 RBI at Friends' Central School in Pennsylvania this spring.
With the doubleheader sweep, Vermont (11-12) snapped a season-long five-game losing streak. The Lake Monsters return home to historic Centennial Field for a two-game series vs. the Brockton Rox Thursday and Friday beginning at 7:05 pm each night.
