Rock Cats Squeak by RubberDucks; Win 1-0

June 5, 2014

New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats defeated the Akron RubberDucks by the score of 1-0 on Thursday evening at New Britain Stadium, avoiding the three-game sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Indians Double-A affiliate.

Ironically enough, it was a pitcher's duel on Bat Night at the ballpark, with both teams putting up zeroes all the way up until LF Tony Thomas launched a one-out, solo home run in the bottom half of the seventh off of Akron reliever RHP Adam Miller.

New Britain starter LHP Sean Gilmartin was tremendous all night long - working 7 1/3 innings, allowing no runs on five hits, walking none and striking out eight. His ability to mix pitches and keep the Akron hitters guessing kept the Rock Cats in the game until Thomas could crack the scoreless tie.

RubberDucks starter RHP Cory Anderson pitched very well in his own right - earning a no decision on the night after throwing six scoreless innings.

The righthander gave up just three hits while walking one and striking out five. Miller, who pitched two innings in relief and gave up the home run to Thomas, sees his record fall to 0-2.

New Britain takes the show on the road starting Friday evening, playing the first of a weekend series against the Binghamton Mets. Rock Cats starter RHP Virgil Vasquez will square off against RHP Matt Bowman with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
