Snappers split doubleheader against LumberKings

June 20, 2014

A pair of explosive sixth innings decided both legs of Friday night's doubleheader as the Beloit Snappers split the twin bill against the Clinton LumberKings.

Clinton took the first game, a 7-1 victory, behind a five-run sixth inning that blew the game wide open. The Snappers responded in the second game, as Beloit put up four runs in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie en route to its 5-1 victory.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Clinton struck first with a solo shot home run by Austin Wilson. The home run was Wilson's eleventh of the season and he ranks second in the Midwest League in the category.

The Snappers would answer with a run in the third inning but Clinton provided the game's decisive blow in the sixth.

With the game tied 1-1, two bunts and two walked Clinton batters set up the first two runs of the inning. Chantz Mack then smacked a 3-run triple down the first baseline to break the game open and give the LumberKings a 6-1 lead.

Three straight walks with two outs in the seven inning provided Clinton's insurance run, as Zach Shank crossed the plate.

Lars Huijer pitched all seven innings for Clinton, only allowing three hits and one run on the night.

Lou Trivino lasted 5.1 innings for the Snappers, allowing three hits and five earned runs.

In the second game, the Snappers struck first in the opening inning, as Melvin Mercedes would score on a wild pitch after a triple to right field.

The LumberKings compiled hits in the ensuing innings but couldn't convert the baserunners into runs as they went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. In the fifth inning, Clinton had a runner on third base with one out, but couldn't send him across the plate.

After the LumberKings tied the game in the top of the sixth inning, the Snappers responded in the bottom of the frame. Ryan Mathews hit a solo shot home run to right field to give Beloit a 2-1 lead.

Another Mercedes triple and hits by Boog Powell, Tyler Marincov and Luis Baez provided the additional three insurance runs.

Junior Mendez pitched five scoreless innings for the Snappers, giving up three hits.

Beloit and Clinton return to action Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at Pohlman Field.
