Comeback bid falls short, Snappers lose 11-6

June 21, 2014

A disastrous nine-run second inning proved to be insurmountable as the Beloit Snappers fell 11-6 to the Clinton LumberKings Saturday night.

Clinton appeared to have the game in control as it jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the second inning. The nine runs scored in the frame marks a season-high in the category for the LumberKings, topping the eight runs scored twice on occasion this year.

Unlike Beloit's remarkable nine-run comeback victory against Kane County last week, the Snappers' dramatic heroics fell short Saturday night.

After scoring two runs in the eighth inning and cutting the deficit to five runs, Beloit proceeded to load the bases with no outs. Jaycob Brugman struck out and Tyler Marincov grounded into a double play to end the inning and Beloit's comeback hopes.

Beloit starting pitcher Dylan Covey was chased from the game in the middle of the second inning, after allowing seven hits and seven earned runs. Covey gave up ten hits and eight earned runs in his last meeting against Clinton, a 18-4 loss on June 1.

Brent Powers struggled in relief for Beloit, giving up six hits and four earned runs.

Jeff Zimmerman batted twice and tripled twice in the second inning for the LumberKings, driving in three runs.

After Clinton tacked on another run in the third inning, the Snappers recorded their first hit and put up four runs in the fourth.

Phil Pohl delivered an RBI-double to score BA Vollmuth and gave Beloit its first run of the game. After a Melvin Mercedes sacrifice fly, Ryan Mathews hit an RBI-triple to score another Beloit run. Jaycob Brugman finished the inning with an RBI-single to cut Clinton's lead to 11-4.

Eight Clinton batters recorded hits in the ballgame, including six multi-hit performances.

B.A. Vollmuth led the Beloit bats as he went 3-for-4 on the night. Trevor Bayless, Bobby Wahl and Sam Roberts combined for six scoreless innings in relief for the Snappers.

The Snappers and LumberKings conclude their four-game series tomorrow afternoon at Pohlman Field at 2:00 p.m.
