Home Run Derby Results in Snappers Win

BELOIT, Wisc. - Yesterday's game had four home runs in it but that was nothing compared to today's game at Pohlman Field. There were eight homers hit in the game total, five of them being from the bats of the Snappers, resulting in a 8-6 win over the Peoria Chiefs.

The first pitch of the bottom of the first set the theme for the entire game as Joe Bennie homered (5) off of Chiefs' Luis Perdomo on a line drive to center field.

Beloit was able to extend the lead as Bennie hit an RBI single to on a line drive to right field and Justin Higley was able to ground into a force out that allowed another run to score, making the score 3-0.

The Snappers gave up the hopes of a shutout when Peoria's Darren Seferina tripled (10) on a fly ball to left and then was batted in when Paul DeJong grounded out to the shortstop in the third.

Peoria took the lead, 4-3, by putting up a four spot in the fifth with the help of a throwing error by Beloit's shortstop, Mikey White, and a three run homer from Alex De Leon (11).

Beloit regained the lead with a two run homer to right center by Justin Higley in the bottom of the fifth.

The homers kept on coming as Gabriel Santana smoked one over the left field wall in the sixth, his first as a Snapper. The very next pitch to Bennie resulted in his second homer of the day and his sixth of the year. In the eighth, Iolana Akau was able to join in the fun, homering on a fly ball to left field, extending the Snappers lead to 8-5.

The Chiefs attempted to come back and did so a little bit when Kenny Peoples-Walls hit a solo homer to left in the ninth but that was it, resulting in a 8-6 Snappers win.

Cody Stull earned the win, going to 3-3 on the year as he pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings. Carlos Navas came in to close out the game, only pitching 1/3 of an inning as he earned his second save of the year.

Bennie went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI today and has three homers in the last two games.

Beloit is 41-65 on the year and 15-21 in the second half. After a league wide off day, the Snappers go on a road trip to the Eastern Division for three games against the Great Lakes Loons and the Lansing Lugnuts before they return home to Pohlman Field on Tuesday, August 11th for a six game home stand.
