Behind another quality start and a strong showing at the plate, the Birmingham Barons (59-65) earned a 6-3 win over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (50-72) on Sunday night in the opener of their five-game series at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

  • Turning Point: The Barons broke a 1-0 game open with a third-inning rally. Jameson Fisher and Joel Booker were hit by pitches to start the inning before a wild pitch moved them to second and third base. Luis Basabe plated Fisher with a sacrifice fly to double the lead for Birmingham. Trey Michalczewski then doubled the lead again with a two-run homer, his sixth of the season, 399 feet into the left field stands to give the Barons a 4-0 advantage they wouldn't give up.
  • By The Numbers: With sacrifice flies in both the first and seventh innings to go with his homer, Michalczewski finished 1-for-3, tying a season-high with four RBI to lead the Birmingham offense. Basabe went 2-for-4 to drive in the other two Barons runs. Booker set the table from the leadoff spot, going 1-for-2 with two walks, a stolen base, and three run scored.
  • Moments That Mattered: Looking to cut into a five-run deficit in the eighth, the Jumbo Shrimp scored a pair of runs against Birmingham reliever Jhoan Quijada. But the right-hander rebounded to end his Double-A debut with a ground ball double play from Joe Dunarnd, stopping the rally and keeping the Barons up 6-3.
  • Facts And Figures: The double play protected a lead that was built behind Barons starter Tanner Banks (W, 4-4). Over 7.0 sharp innings, Banks gave up just one run on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts to earn his second consecutive win. After Quijada's inning on the mound, Matt Foster (S, 1) came in and pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to finish the win and earn his first Double-A save. Defensively, the Barons turned four double plays in the victory.
  • Up Next: The two sides continue the series with a 6:05 p.m. matchup on Monday night. Matt Tomshaw (4-7, 5.86) will start for Birmingham against Jacksonville's Nick Neidert (11-6, 3.13). Curt Bloom will have the call on 960 WERC News Radio and the iHeart Radio app.
