A five run bottom of the 8th proved to be the difference for the Boise Hawks (1-1) as they fell 6-1 to the Spokane Indians (1-1) on night number two of the Northwest League season.
Riley Pint, the Rockies number three overall prospect according to MLB.com, made his first start of the year going three innings and allowing one run, but zero earned runs, along with five strikeouts and four walks.
Pint's only run came on a passed ball in the first inning. After he came out of the game, Javier Medina took over and went four innings unscathed. The righty ran into trouble when he came back on for the 8th as he would finish after four and one-third allowing four earned runs.
He got the first out of the 8th but then Spokane's JP Martinez ripped a triple to right center field and the next four hitters followed with hits of their own. The Hawks kicked the ball around in the 8th as Mike Bunal came on for 2/3 of an inning allowing one run but it was unearned. After eight innings Boise trailed 6-0.
The lone Boise run came in the top of the ninth when the Hawks got a double from Cade Harris to start the inning and Danny Edgeworth knocked in his third RBI of the year to end the shutout with a double down the right field line.
Scott Engler gets his first win of the year for Spokane while Riley Pint picks up the loss. Cade Harris continues his hot start as he goes 2 for 3 with a run scored and two walks. In his 10 plate appearances this year, Harris has reached base eight times including five walks.
Greg Jones also had a multi-hit game in his first professional game behind the dish. He went 2-3 with a walk.
The Hawks will play game three of the five game set with Spokane tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. MT. The game can be heard on 101.5 KOOL FM or the MiLB App.
Boise will return home on Wednesday to take on the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes at 7:15 M.T. Fans can get tickets at BoiseHawks.com or call 208-322-5000.
