Bierman Strong, Hot Rods Edge Lunguts
Bowling Green, KY - LHP Sean Bierman did not allow an earned run in five innings to lead the Bowling Green Hot Rods (1-0, 39-30) to a second half-opening 2-1 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (0-1, 32-38) Thursday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. Andrew Toles, Tommy Coyle, and Joey Rickard each had two hits in the win, which was Bowling Green's ninth in their last eleven games and their sixth in seven games against Lansing in 2013.
After the Lugnuts scored the game's first run on an error in the top of the first, Rickard helped the Hot Rods answer in the bottom of the second inning. With one out and Marty Gantt at first base, Rickard lined a ball down the left field line for a stand-up double. The ricochet of the ball off the wall sent it into shallow left field and allowed Gantt to score from first base.
Toles started the scoring again for the Hot Rods in the bottom of the fifth inning when he doubled down the line in right field. Tyler Goeddel then reached on a bunt single, and a Kellen Sweeney errant throw at first base allowed Toles to score and the Hot Rods to take a 2-1 lead.
Hot Rods pitchers, impressively led by Bierman, were able to use that one-run advantage and did not allow a run after the first inning, turning three double plays defensively. Matt Ramsey worked around a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth to earn his fifth save and preserve the Hot Rods win.
The three-game series continues Friday night at Bowling Green Ballpark at 7:05 PM. LHP Blake Snell (2-5, 3.88) gets the pearl for the Hot Rods. Lansing will counter with RHP Ben White (4-3, 2.79). The Forever Communications Pregame Show with Hank Fuerst and Chris Kleinhans-Schulz begins at 6:35 PM on 1340 The Ticket WBGN-AM and 1340wbgn.com.
