MIDLAND, MI - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (22-14) dropped a tough extra innings game to the Great Lakes Loons (11-23) 6-5 tonight. The Loons tied it in the ninth with two outs and two strikes, and won it in extras on a wild pitch.
The Hot Rods got things rolling early, as they scored twice in the top of the first inning. SS Taylor Walls worked a lead off walk, and later scored on an error. 2B Zach Rutherford reached on that error, and later scored on a sac fly from C Ronaldo Hernandez , making it 2-0 Hot Rods.
The Loons took the lead in the bottom of the inning. They sent eight batters to the plate in the inning, and took advantage of a trio of Hot Rods errors. LF Starling Heredia highlighted the inning with a two run single.
The Hot Rods retook the lead with a three run fourth. Aldo CF Carl Chester worked a one out walk, 3B Adrian Rondon hit an RBI double to right field two batters later. That set the stage for 1B Jim Haley , who hit his third career home run- a no-doubter to left field, and it put the Hot Rods up 5-3.
The Loons got a run back in the bottom of the inning, making it a 5-4 game.
Both teams were largely held at bay until the ninth. With two outs and two strikes, Heredia sent a line drive home run over the wall in left, tying the game at 5-5.
The Hot Rods had runners on second and third in the 10th, but were unable to score. In the bottom of the inning, with runners on first and third and two outs, a wild pitch allowed the winning run to score, and the Loons walked off with a 6-5 victory.
RHP Drew Strotman received a no decision. He threw six innings, allowing four hits and four runs (two earned), walking two and striking out five. RHP Riley O'Brien threw three innings, allowing one hit- the home run in the ninth- and two walks, striking out four. LHP Hunter Schryver took the tough luck loss tonight, his second of the season.
The Hot Rods will look to even the series tomorrow morning at 9:35am Central. They will send RHP Tobias Myers (3-2, 4.33) to the hill, while the Loons will counter with RHP Edwin Uceta (1-1, 3.29).
