BOWLING GREEN, KY - The Bowling Green Hot Rods pitched their second shutout of the season to take down the Great Lakes Loons 5-0, and win the four game series three game to one. LHP Josh Fleming was phenomenal on the mound once again throwing six innings in his fourth start of the season.
In the first three innings of the game the pitchers dominated. At one moment it looked like the Loons would get on the board first when CF Brandon Montgomery hit a long fly ball to left field, LF Moises Gomez ran all the way back to the wall, reached the glove up and over it, and brought down the baseball turning a likely home run into a fly out and keeping the Loons of the board.
The Hot Rods struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning after being no hit in the first three. RF Gomez led things off with a single. The Hot Rods then loaded the bases and C Chris Betts picked up his first hit of the season with an RBI single. 3B Adrian Rondon followed suit with an RBI single and the Hot Rods had a 2-0 lead.
The Hot Rods offense wasn't done at just the two runs, as they added on a run in the fifth thanks to a leadoff triple from RF Emilio Gustave who scored when 2b Vidal Brujan was caught stealing but still forced a throw to second. In the sixth Betts hit his first career home run over the right field wall to make the score 4-0. DH Ronaldo Hernandez added on the fifth run with his second home run in as many days in the bottom of the eighth inning.
LHP Josh Fleming got the start for the Hot Rods and he was lights out, throwing six innings and allowing just four hits while striking out six. RHP Jhonleider Salinas pitched a 1-2-3 seventh. LHP Hunter Schryver finished off the game only allowing a hit in the final two innings. With the win the Hot Rods stay just a half game back of Lansing in the Eastern Division as Lansing took down South Bend earlier today.
Next up the Dayton Dragons come to town as the Hot Rods will look to win another series. The Hot Rods have not announced their starter for the game yet, and the Dragon will send RHP Andrew Jordan (0-0, 1.80) to the mound. First pitch will be at 6:35pm at Bowling Green Ballpark.
