LANSING, MI - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (25-15) beat the Lansing Lugnuts (27-14) by a score of 6-3 this evening at Cooley Law School Stadium. LF Carl Chester hit his second career home run in the win, which ended Lansing's nine game winning streak.
Lansing took the lead in the second inning on a pair of singles and a stolen base, leading 1-0.
They doubled the lead in the fourth, when 1B Ryan Noda hit a sac fly, making it 2-0.
Bowling Green got on the board in the sixth, when 2B Vidal Brujan scored on a fielder's choice, cutting the Hot Rods' deficit in half at 2-1.
The Hot Rods tied the game quickly in the seventh, as LF Carl Chester belted his second career home run (and second of the road trip) out to left field on the first pitch of the inning, making it 2-2.
Bowling Green took the lead with four runs in the eighth, highlighted by a 1B Devin Davis RBI single and a hard hit ball that CF Emilio Gustave put in play that was ruled an error, as the Hot Rods took a 6-2 lead.
That lead shrunk a bit in the eighth, when the Lugnuts got on the board again. After a hit by pitch, an RBI double from 2B Samad Taylor scored the home team's third run of the game, but LHP Hunter Schryver locked it down from there, earning his first win of the season.
LHP Josh Fleming got the start on his 22nd birthday, and turned in a solid outing. He threw six innings, allowing nine hits and two runs, walking three and striking out two. Schryver pitched the final three innings, allowing just one hit and one run, striking out a pair as well.
The Hot Rods will look to win the series tomorrow night as they take on the Lugnuts in game two of this three game set. RHP Riley O'Brien (1-0, 1.93) will make his first start of the season, while the Lugnuts will counter with RHP Maverik Buffo (5-1, 5.22). First pitch is set for 7:05pm Eastern Time.
